MarketingStar Trek and modern marketing may seem like strange bedfellows. After all, what do things like lead generation, calls-to-action, and offers have to do with space ships, warp speed, and Klingons?

Even those of us who weren’t devotees of the popular TV series (and movies) know the struggles and frustrations of Dr. Leonard McCoy—the physician on board the starship Enterprise, who was constantly called upon to do things that lay outside of his training as a physician.  Almost a dozen times during the televised episodes, Dr. McCoy responded to a request for help with his trademark: “I’m a doctor, not a (fill in the blank).”

McCoy’s frustrated response has become somewhat of a catch phrase for when we’re asked to do something for which we feel unprepared or unqualified. And for many people in business, that “something” is often marketing.

You may be really good at running your business. You may know the technical side of your industry like the back of your hand. You may know your product line inside and out and know how to recommend just the right solution for a particular situation. But when it comes to marketing and promoting your business, you want to growl, “I’m a (fill in the blank”) not a marketer!”

The thing of it is, that you may actually be really good at closing the deal—at getting someone to use your goods or services. But getting the right people to that point where they’re ready to buy is a whole different skill set. That’s what good marketing is all about. It’s generating qualified leads for your business. And if you’re busy running your business it might make sense to bring in some professional marketing help.

And in today’s marketplace, your website is the most powerful tool at your disposal for doing that. With the proper approach (something known as “Inbound Marketing”) you can get your products and services in front of the right audience—and start generating leads that turn into sales.
